Cyber hygiene is something that many individuals are not aware exists. People with poor cyber hygiene are those that do not take any precautions to ensure the safety and security of their devices or online accounts. They have the following characteristics:
Use the same password for everything
Lose their laptops and phones and do not change passwords to their accounts after this
Have no malware or antivirus installed on their devices
Do not update account passwords
Do not monitor activities on their online accounts
Such poor cyber hygiene habits make one liable to cybercrime and security breaches. These habits make one a target to cyber attacks of all forms. Many Americans do not exhibit good cyber hygiene habits, and they practice unhealthy behaviors that put them at the risk of cyber crimes. A survey conducted showed that many Americans do not practice any online security measures which lead to many having incident responses after a security breach.
What is incident response?
A good percentage of Americans are not aware What is incident response and only know it after they have experienced a cyber attack. An incident response is a form of management and monitoring that is done after a security breach has occurred. It involves the identification of the breach, management, planning and measures put in place. An incident response is done to ensure that the security breach is contained and eradicated. Once this is done, measures are taken to safeguard one’s security and detect any future security breaches.
States with the worst security data
In the USA some states have the worst data security. These states practice poor cyber hygiene habits that jeopardize their online safety. The states with the worst data security also face adverse effects when it comes to cyber attacks. People in these states experience identity theft, fraud and email phishing at its worst. This puts them on a financial toll since millions and billions of dollars are stolen from them each year. The states are mentioned below:
Florida: Florida tops the list with 56% of the residents that do not protect their data
Georgia: Georgia has 55% of its residents that do not protect their data
Louisiana: Louisiana has 55% of residents that do not practice online security.
Montana: Montana has 51% of residents that do not protect their data.
Illinois: Illinois has 55% of residents that do not protect their data.
These five states have the riskiest index when it comes to online security putting them at great risk when it comes to cyber attacks. In a survey conducted people from these states mentioned that they did not see any harm in using the same passwords or sharing their password. From this, it is evident that most Americans are not aware of what cybersecurity is and how to practice good cyber hygiene habits. What they fail to realize is that the consequences of their poor cyber hygiene. For example, in 2017 almost $ 16 billion was stolen from Americans because of cybercrimes. This is a lot of money that is going into identity theft and fraud because a certain percentage of people were unable to practice safe and healthy cyber hygiene.
People do not practice good cyber hygiene until they are the victim of a cybercrime. This is when they run to incident response and want to take necessary precautions. It is high time that people take cyber security seriously and always safeguard their accounts and passwords. There are a couple of measures that people in these states can take to ensure that their data security is among the best. Some of these are:
Installing antivirus on their devices
Using different passwords for different accounts. One can write them down somewhere if they are prone to forgetting.
Always updating one’s password. It is not good to use the same password for a long period.
Never share passwords with anyone including family members.
The states mentioned above can begin practicing good cyber hygiene to reduce the risk of the cyber attacks that they are facing. This will go a long way in ensuring cyber safety and security.
